Shanghai Declaration

Through their combined efforts, concerned parties of the 4th International Ramen Summit/International Ramen Manufacturers Association General Meeting achieved their initial goals with advice from and cooperation of the Chinese government.

At the 4th International Ramen Summit/International Ramen Manufacturers Association General Meeting, eleven major ramen manufacturers of the world and one association gathered to exchange their opinions about production, distribution, and consumption of instant ramen. They all agreed to work hard for the healthy growth of the industry by improving product quality and supplying instant ramen suitable to the needs of the people in each country.

Instant ramen was first developed and sold in Japan in August 1958. Today, 45 years later, it has become an international food and is consumed all over the world.

Annual consumption of instant ramen is currently 49.9 billion servings and is expected to reach 100 billion by 2010.

The developer of instant ramen worked hard to satisfy the following requirements: "easy and convenient," "excellent preservation," "hygienic and safe," "delicious," and "reasonably priced."

Instant ramen became so popular because major and innovative manufacturers worked hard to develop and supply products that meet the requirements and also match the tastes of consumers in each country.

As we enter the 21st century, the world requires a rapid recovery from the current economic recession, preservation of the global environment, efficient use of resources, extermination of international terrorism, peaceful settlements of regional disputes, and accurate measures for natural disasters such as climatic damage.

Members of the instant ramen industry are aware of this critical situation. At the closing of the 4th International Ramen Summit/International Ramen Manufacturers Association General Meeting, they declared their intention to contribute to the realization of a healthier, safer, more enriched, and peaceful world through moral industrial activities.
